Fund for Sustainable Development starts a new program supported by the Ford Foundation MORE SUSTAINABLE JOBS FOR RURAL COMMUNITIES.

In September 2007 FSD received a grant from the Ford Foundation for implementing a new program called “Sustainable development and jobs in rural areas” (RURALJOB). $ 500 000 were awarded to the Fund to help rural municipal communities in forested areas throughout Russia face most important challenges:

It is based on outcomes and results achieved in the earlier completed research project “Energy Efficiency (EE) at the municipal level: local community development towards improving life quality and environment” funded by Ford Foundation and implemented by FSD in 2006-2007.
The basic goal of the Program is to create viable models of citizen engagement and equal access to the processes of sustainable local natural resource management to develop the economic resources available to the communities. The major emphasis will be made on utilization of forest resources.
It is planned for two years, from September 2007 till August 2009.
In the beginning the Program will take place in two pre-selected model communities, one in the Volga Region and another one at the RFE. Local communities with the help of FSD and hired independent experts will find the most optimal and efficient way of utilizing local resources deriving mainly from forest to provide sustainable and environmentally-friendly source of revenue for local citizens and municipal communities as a whole. Later created models are planned to be distributed among other interested municipalities.
