MORE SUSTAINABLE JOBS FOR RURAL COMMUNITIES

On November 12-13, 2008, in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast an interregional seminar Innovative Technologies and New Jobs for Rural Communities was held under the Ford Foundation funded RURALJOB Program. The seminar was organized by the Fund for Sustainable Development (FSD), Varnavinsky Municipal Government and the Povetluzhye Association.

Seminar goal: sharing experience of utilizing innovative technologies and creating new jobs in rural communities.
The seminar was joined by the heads and staff of 12 municipal administrations from Nizhny Novgorod, Kirovskaya and Vologda Oblasts and the Republic of Mari El; the staff of the Fund for Sustainable Development; entrepreneurs; an energy-efficiency expert from Dzerzhinsk Polytechnic Institute; an environmental lawyer from Moscow; and the staff of the Nature Saving Technology Center, an NGO from Nizhny Novgorod.

Presenters from the Fund for Sustainable Development spoke about  FSD programs and the results of its project activities in the Volga Region and in the Russian Far East.
The participating experts presented reviews of energy-efficiency and the of the legal aspects of tourism business development.

The heads and officials from municipalities spoke about the introduction of innovate technologies and job creation in rural areas; and a video film on this topic was shown.
The materials of the seminar will be used for preparing an interregional Povetluzhye Mobile Exhibition.

The seminar participants visited two project sites: the boiler plant in Mikhalenino Settlement where under the Ford Foundation project a special boiler was installed that works on wood waste instead of costly coal; and the local middle school in which comfortable indoor temperatures are maintained thank to the use of new modern heating technologies based on wood waste.
  
The resolution of the seminar included the following recommendations:



Seminar participants visited the boiler plant in Mikhalenino Settlement where they learned about the experience of using wood waste as fuel


The principal of the middle school in Mikhalenino Settlement is satisfied with the quality of heating


The staff of the Fund for Sustainable Development acquainted representatives of 12 municipal administrations with the result of the Ford Foundation project
