Energy-Efficiency and Jobs in Remote Rural Settlements in the Russian Far East

On August 17-21, a seminar Energy-Efficiency and Jobs in Remote Rural Settlements in the Russian Far East will be held in Plastun settlement in Terneisky raion under the Sustainable Development and Jobs in Rural Areas (RURALJOB) Program that is being implemented by the Fund for Sustainable Development (FSD) with financial support from the Ford Foundation.

The key goal of the Program is to create viable citizen engagement models and ensure equal access to sustainable local natural resource management processes, environmental justice and, thus, provide communities with resources needed for sustainable economic development. Special emphasis is being placed on the use of non-timber forest products and the utilization of logging and woodworking waste. At the seminar, which is being organized by the Fund for Sustainable Development, Moscow, and the Charitable Foundation for the Development of Northern Primorye, attendees from Moscow, Yekaterinburg, Buryatia, Nizhny Novgorod, Kemerovo and Sakhalin oblasts and Khabarovsk and Primorsky krais will discuss the issue of creating new jobs in their region and exchange unique and innovate experience in this area.

The seminar will also include a round table; site visits to the divisions of OJSC Terneiles, which uses latest energy-efficiency tetchiness; and to the boiler plant of the hospital in Plastun, where a FSD project involving the conversion of the boiler from the use of diesel fuel to sawdust (waste from OJSC Terneiles) is being completed.
