Community Development Support Program in Dagestan

The projects of the consortium “Promoting Environmentally Friendly Attitudes to Dagestan Nature and Resources” are currently implemented in the Republic of Dagestan under the CDSP Program in Agulsky Raion, a remote and economically backward region. The projects are aimed at improving conditions in the local school and hospital and developing local crafts and ecotourism.

The conditions in the hospital located in the raion capital, Tpig Settlement, leave much to be desired: the obsolete water supply system provides only technical water and there is no hot water supply at all. As a result of project activities, 2,072 m of decayed water pipes were replaced with new ones made of reinforced plastic; drinking water and hot water supply systems were installed in the hospital; and the sewage system of the whole building of the hospital was overhauled.

Work has begun in the middle school in Tpig Settlement to winterize 12 classrooms and 2 halls by replacing 31 window units and 12 doors with the use of modern technology.

In Agulsky Raion, 4 ecotourism routes were developed; a local crafts museum is in the process of being founded; and an active advertising campaign aimed at attracting tourists to this region is conducted. The promotion of tourism means new jobs for the community and better economic development of Agulsky Raion.
