June 2010.

The Fund for Sustainable Development (FSD) in partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Russian Regional Office held a round table on the subject of Sustainable Community Development and Local Self-Governance: Interaction of Experts and Implementers.

The discussion took place on June 29, 2010, at the Institute of Contemporary Development and was focused on the issues and prospects of community development, improvement of the system of local self-government and the need to provide consultations to local self-government officials.

The organizers presented their proposals on working with thematic expert and implementer communities with the aim of receiving consultation support for managing, designing, discussing and seeking solutions to practical concerns facing communities and local self-government.

The participants supported the initiative of FSD and UNDP Russian Regional Office on forming a thematic community of experts and implementers in the sphere of local community development entitled “Municipal”.

Thematic communities are groups of experts in applied and fundamental knowledge and implementers with practical experience in utilizing knowledge in a broad range of fields who are connected through electronic distribution and a website (http://solex-un.ru). The “Municipal” thematic community shall become a point of interaction for experts and implementers in the field of local community development, municipal governance and local self-government: http://solex-un.ru/municipal. The site will be launched in August 2010.

The practical use of the technology of thematic communities has demonstrated its effectiveness as a mechanism of consolidating dispersed knowledge, ideas and practical findings in the process of tackling various tasks. This simple and universal technology may be recommended as a means of providing consultation support to managing, designing and seeking feasible solutions to practical objectives in the country’s regions.

The project is supported by the RF Ministry of Economic Development.
