Water is Not Only a Source of Life

S.Danilov-Danilyan, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Director of the Institute of Water Problems at the Russian Academy of Sciences and a member of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Sustainable Development, spoke at Tula University on September 29, 2009 about water resources as a strategic factor of long-term development in Russia.

Teachers and students of the university filled the spacious auditorium in which the meeting was held.

According to the presenter, in the course of the 20th century and, especially, during the past 50 years, the anthropogenic impact on the water cycle of the planet has reached a global scope, due to hydrotechnical construction alone. He pointed out two aspects of water security: meeting the needs of the national economy in water resources and fulfilling the need of the global community in efficient utilization of a country’s water resources that are in excess for the national economy.
