The Fund “Sustainable Development” Launches a New Three-Year Community Development Support Program in the Russian Federation

This program will be implemented in the Russian Far East, the Northern Caucasus and other regions of Russia with financial support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Pursuant to the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961, USAID has concluded a Cooperative Agreement with the Fund “Sustainable Development” for a sum of $5,500,000 for the implementation of the Community Development Support Program in the Russian Federation for the period from 2006 through 2009.

The Program will promote the comprehensive development of local communities through supporting the activities of municipalities in addressing environmental, economic and social issues and will consist of the following key components:

  1. Organizing targeted grant contests to motivate municipalities to take part in the Program;
  2. Disseminating successful Russian and international community development experience; and
  3. Conducting educational activities on the subject matter “Local Community Development”.

A Public Coordinating Council (PCC) will be formed to guide the implementation of the Program and to ensure openness, fairness and equal possibilities for all organizations participating in the grant contests. The primary function of the PCC will be to make funding decisions on contest applications that have undergone expert reviews and to oversee the targeted use of the grant funds of the Program.
