The Fund for Sustainable Development Becomes a Winner in the Moscow Socially Significant Projects Contest

In June 2006, the activities of this winner project, “City Youth: Learning to be Useful”,  which is being carried out under the guidance of the Fund for Sustainable Development, have included a host of master classes for teachers, educators, and instructors of school and youth groups and clubs. The master classes, which  are led by the heads of the best environmental and social youth projects implemented in the regions of Russia under the ROLL Program, are aimed at sharing experience in applying innovative techniques to involve young people in the life of their city and in socially useful  environmental activities.

Master Class # 1. June 20 (10:00 am - 5:00 pm)

Topic: “A Creative and Joyful Study of Nature” - experience in introducing an integrated multidisciplinary curriculum to promote the emotional and patriotic development of children (aged 5-15) (ethno-nature therapy).

Facilitator: Dr. Shpotova, director of the Environmental Education Center in Obninsk.

Master Class # 2. June 27 (10:00 am - 5:00 pm)

Topic: “The Parks Friends Children’s Movement” - involving youth in environmental activities in Moscow parks and promoting  wildlife conservation in a city.

Facilitators: E.Knizhnikova, coordinator of the Moscow Program of the Zapovedniki Environmental Education Center, and Yu.Sevruk, coordinator of the Moscow Program of the Zapovedniki Environmental Education Center.

Master Class # 3. June 28 (10:00 am - 5:00 pm)

Topic: “Environmental Fraternity” - using the Internet for involving children and young people in the national environmental protection movement.

Facilitators: Dr. Rykhlikova, Senior Researcher of the Ecology Soil Sciences Institute at Moscow State University, A.Lyandzberg, head of the Animal Ecology and Biological Monitoring Laboratory at the Youth Creativity Center of the Soil  Sciences Department at Moscow State University.

Master Class # 4. June 29 (10:00 am - 5:00 pm)

Topic: “Clean City for  Children and with Children” - experience of  youth environmental groups and Pushchino city government in fulfilling the project “We Are Responsible for Our City” of the local Youth Center.

Facilitators: Dr.Sapozhnikova, an ecologist (Pushchino), and S. Davydenkova, head of the Youth Center in Pushchino.

The results of these master classes will be used for designing and implementing  small projects at educational institutions in Moscow that work with schoolchildren and young people. Under these projects, Moscow adolescents will participate in projects aimed at preserving the nature of the city and providing training in traditional nature management methods.
