Program News. Environment and Public Health in Nevinnomysk and Other Regions of Eurokhim Company Presence

In November 2006, the first contest of the environmental and social program “Environment and Public Health in Nevinnomysk and Other Regions of Eurokhim Company Presence” was announced. Eurokhim and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) are jointly implementing this program.

On December 15, the Fund for Sustainable Development that is managing the Program, conducted a grant application-writing workshop for thirty representatives of the city’s administration, the utilities services,  the water supply company (Vodokanal), condominiums, the vocational school, the higher educational establishment, schools, child care centers, public health institutions,  the City’s Youth Committee, and the Stavropol Youth Union who had expressed their intention to participate in addressing the critical problems of the city.
The priority topics of the contest were identified on the basis of the results of round table discussions of the city’s problems conducted with the participation of stakeholders and local organizations.

These topics are the following: preserving and improving child health through bettering the environment in child care centers, including improving the quality of potable water and the air; introducting energy and resource saving techniques in institutions funded by the municipal budget (schools,  kindergartens, children’s homes, hospitals, etc.); reducing environmental pollution through improved industrial and household waste processing, including sewage and return water treatment; landscaping and improving the city’s districts with the participation of local small businesses, NGOs and the community; involving NGOs (including youth NGOs) into projects addressing the socio-environmental issues of the city; and reducing the negative impact of agricultural activities on the environment through the introduction of environmentally sound agricultural technology. The Working Group of the Program is actively promoting information about the Program, which is the first of its kind to be carried out in the city and adjacent rural areas.

All activities that supported the official launching of the Program in the city – meetings of donors, the city’s administration, and the management of the AZOT plant (Eurokhim’s leading facility in the region) and a press conference for city and regional journalists – demonstrate the existing interest in joint multi-sector activities within the local community with the participation of the city’s activists. The first practical results of the Program preparation activities – citizen initiatives presented in the form of applications for project funding – will be handed over to the Working Group of the City and FSD by January 2007. Project activities will begin on March 1, 2007.

On December 14, 2006, the official launching of the Program at Nevinnomysk Administration was attended by (from left to right): Deputy Mayor R.Makushkin,  chairman of the Program’s Working Group; Mayor V.Ledovskoi; Chairman of the City Duma N. Bogdanova; and representatives of the Program’s donors: T. Yermolayeva, director of the Working Group for  Corporate Social Responsibility, and lead specialist  of the PR Department of Eurokhim; and Yu.Kazakov, Environmental Policy Adviser, USAID.
