The issue of government support of small businesses was discussed at a Small Business and Sustainable Development: Best Practices Round Table held at the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast Legislative Assembly

The Small Business and Sustainable Development: Best Practices Round Table took place on May 16, 2012 in Nizhny Novgorod under the program Promoting Sustainable Development in Russia Programá that is being currently implemented with financial support from the Citi Foundation. This event, organized by the Fund for Sustainable Development (Moscow) and the Low Impact Technologies Center (Nizhny Novgorod) jointly with the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast Legislative Assembly, was held during the Great Rivers of Russia National Forum. The round table was attended by local government officials from 24 raions of the region and representatives of Citibank Privolzhsky Branch, businesses and NGOs.

The moderator of the round table, deputy chairman of the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast Legislative Assembly E.Morozov, gave the floor to D. Labudze, minister for the support and development of small businesses, the consumer market and services, who described the situation with small businesses. A. Koshelev, manager of Citibank Privolzhsky Branch, presented the bank’s philanthropic programs. O.Fokin, FSD executive director, and A.Volkov, FSD projects manager, presented the new book “Small Business and Sustainable Development in Russia: Best Practices”. A.Turchenko, director of Nizhny Novgorod Innovation Business Incubator, acquainted the audience with the work of his organization.

The participants in the round table expressed a special interest in the presentation of N. Kvasnikova, director of a dairy Moloko Factory from the city of Gorodets, who became one of the heroes of the new book on small business development best practices. She spoke about the successes of the factory and also about the challenges facing community-based small business development. She pointed out the need to revise the mechanisms of tenders for the supply of products by businesses to government institutions to better control the quality of food products delivered, in particular, to children’s establishments. The participants supported this initiative and applied to the Legislative Assembly of the region to consider the possibility of passing a relevant decision on a legislative level.
