The Fund for Sustainable Development presented its Promoting Sustainable Development in Russia Program at the RF Chamber of Commerce and Industry

On March 28, the Fund for Sustainable Development together with partners - Russian Microfinance Center and the Citi Foundation - conducted a round table “Is it Easy to Become an Entrepreneur in Russia? Pros and Cons” at the RF Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

At this event, the participants became acquainted with the Promoting Sustainable Development in Russia Program that was carried out by FSD in 2011-2012 with support from the Citi Foundation. A brochure “Small Business and Sustainable Development in Russia: Best Practices” printed during project implementation contains 29 concrete practical examples of business success stories. Oleg Fokin, FSD executive director, presented this publication and spoke about how its idea had originated and why entrepreneurs from all corners of Russia and their experience described in the publication deserve much respect and a careful study.

The entrepreneurs, whose businesses were depicted in the brochure, were invited to the round table as guests.

Andrei Suknev from Ulan Ude presented the business project of his entire life – the Great Baikal Trail. Andrei Evstigneyev (Astron LLC, Samara) described his business, which is an example of a high technology entrepreneurship – production of vibration protection equipment and its role in preventing technogenic catastrophes.

The products of the creative studio Jolly Felt were presented by its founders from the city of Rybinsk Liya Visnapu and Pavel Gavrilov.

The articles created in the pottery from the rural settlement of Nizhniye Tavolgi were presented by Svetlana Maslikova who painted most of them.

Sergei Konin, the head of the research and manufacturing association Green-Pik from the city of Kovrov, Vladimir Oblast, spoke about the unique products of his company.

At the stand of Forest Products LLC from Khabarovsk, the guests and participants admired its products: local honey, teas made of wild medicinal herbs and products made of ferns. Elena Shchipitsina from Novokuznetsk presented her firm LENA LLC and offered everyone to sample syrups made of berries that grow in Siberian forests. The tasting of products put out by the Museum Marshmallow Factory in Kolomenskoye took place in a form of a theatrical performance.

Similar round tables at which the project will be presented will also be organized in Ufa, Yekaterinburg, Saint Petersburg and Nizhny Novgorod.

It is symbolical that these events will take place on the eve of the international UN conference on sustainable development Rio+20 scheduled for June 2012 in Rio de Janeiro.

In 2012, it will be 20 years since the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development was held, which was a major forum of the 20th century that announced the transition to sustainable development as the goal of modern civilization.

The appearance of environmentally and socially oriented small and middle-sized businesses is a practical accomplishment along the way to the transition to sustainable development on a local community level.
