Amur Initiative Phase 2 projects have been approved at the Fund for Sustainable Development Advisory Committee Working group meeting.

On April 2, 2009 in Moscow took place the Fund for Sustainable Development Advisory Committee Working group meeting. The Working group consisted of representatives of the Russian Federal Ministry for Economic development, Khabarovskiy Krai Government, NGO’s and businesses. Applications submitted to the open contest of the targeted program “Replicating results of the targeted program for improving drinking water quality in the settlements along Amur river in Khabarovskiy Krai (Amur Initiative – Phase 2)” funded in partnership by USAID and Khabarovskiy Krai Government were reviewed and approved. Six practical projects devoted to providing safe and high quality drinking water in rural settlements located at the banks of Amur river will be funded in 2009. Currently citizens in these villages have to use river water for drinking and other needs. Sometimes, however, concentration of toxicants in it is 25 times higher than the prescribed sanitary levels. Small indigenous people is the most vulnerable group in this situation since river fish is the main food source for them. Projects will help approximately 18 000 rural citizens currently suffering from intestinal diseases, hepatitis A and direct poisoning due to polluted water consumption.
