News, February 2007.

The city of Belaya Kalitva has joined the Sustainability and Conservation Program for Russia (2007-2008) launched jointly by the Fund for Sustainable Development and ALCOA Foundation.

The ALCOA Sustainability and Conservation Program for Russia (2007-2008) was presented on February 1 at  School # 6 in the city of Belaya Kalitva, Rostov Oblast, to nearly 40 representatives of schools, children’s educational institutions, the  Department for Education, Committee for Youth Policy, the City Administration, and Belokalitvensky Forestry Enterprise.

The goal of this one-and-a-half year Program is to promote sustainable development in partnership regions in Russia, including assistance to environmental and natural resources protection activities in 3 municipalities – Samara, Belaya Kalitva, and Lubuchany Settlement in Chekhovsky Raion, Moscow Oblast – by means of public education among the youth and support to local NGOs.

The key partners of the new Program – schools in Belaya Kalitva and Samara – participated in the previous educational project of ALCOA Foundation and the Russian division of ALCOA Corporation - “Andy Warhol On-Line Curriculum” - during which they learned about artistic methods and techniques. The students of these schools are now successfully using new computer techniques in their research work. The goal of this project is to involve young activists from Belaya Kalitva into new socially useful projects in their city.

On February 2, an information seminar was held for teachers (biology, geography, chemistry, computer science, and elementary school teachers) from seven schools and heads of children’s creative and biology study groups.  At the seminar, they were familiarized with how to develop and carry out conservation research and socially useful projects intended for schoolchildren and how to involve environmental schoolchildren groups into the national movements Ecological Cooperation and Friends of Protected Islands.

Under this new Program, Alcoa Foundation and Alcoa Corporation’s plants in Russia (Belaya Kalitva Metallurgical Plant and Samara Metallurgical Plant) together with its Russian partner, Fund for Sustainable Development (FSD), will support projects of community non-profit and municipal organizations aimed at sustainable development. In spring, a grant contest will be announced in the three selected areas with the aim of pooling municipal resources. Training seminars will be organized for grant applicants.

FSD staff met with potential Program participants – the House of Children’s Creativity and the Local Lore Museum – to engage a broad range of municipal and public organizations in the Program. Sociologists from Rostov-on-Don will conduct a brief questionnaire survey to verify the compliance of the contest’s topics with the critical needs of the communities.

In late February – early March 2007, the ALCOA Sustainability and Conservation Program for Russia will be presented in Samara and Lubuchany.
