Successful Environmental Expedition under the “We Are In Charge of the Future” ALCOA Foundation Program

For three successive years, in early August, environmental expeditions for schoolchildren from Samara and Zhigulevsk to the  Samarskaya Luka National Park have been organized under the “We Are In Charge of the Future” ALCOA Foundation Program with support from the Fund for Sustainable Development and the Zapovedniki Ecological Center

Twenty five young participants joined this year’s expedition free of charge thanks to their active participation in project activities, creative contests, master classes and environmental actions of the Program. The staff of the Samarskaya Luka National Park, where the expedition 2010 Shelekhmetskiye Wilderness took place, have traditionally organized an interesting program devoted to hydrology, ornithology, botanic and reptiles inhabiting the park.

Despite the stifling heat, the children managed to accomplish a lot during the short period of work on their projects. Members of four teams familiarized each other with mini environmental trails they created under the guidance of I. Konstantinova, a teacher from School # 162 in Samara; and in the evenings they took part in contests for the best knowledge of the flora and fauna of Samarskaya Luka conducted by M.Andriyanova, deputy director for environmental education of the Park, thus helping the children to better remember information they had received during practical class and field studies.

G.Sapozhnikova, a FSD consultant, delivered a series of lectures on the topic “Sustainable Development in Russia” that also included discussions of the role of schools and NGOs in implementing the United Nations Sustainable Development Program designed to promote sustainable development and responsible waste management. These lectures were followed by a series of practical lessons devoted to preparing environmental events under the title “No to Waste!”

The four teams participated in contests devoted to environmental protection:  of posters devoted to separate household waste collection; of couplets on the anti-waste themes; of ads of environmentally safe and durable goods, such as, for example, vacuum cleaners, washing machines, telephones or beds). All four teams prepared plans of environmental trainings intended for elementary school students on such topics as how plastic bottles and aluminum cans are recycled or how cell phones and organic waste are processed; and also presented different objects they created from plastic bottles. Because of these activities, the participants in the expedition have realized how easy it is to organize such events when using correct approaches. They will also share their knowledge and skills acquired in the process of the environmental expedition with  pupils of their schools and local residence schools and children from local kindergartens.
