The Alcoa Foundation Advancing Sustainability Fellowships Program Responsible Management of Water Resources for Sustainable Development is Launched in Moscow and Samara

This new two-year program was developed and is being fulfilled by the Fund for Sustainable Development in partnership with the Institute of Water Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow) and Education Center for Ecology and Safety (Samara) with financial support from the Alcoa Foundation. This effort will be joined by leading scientists from Moscow State University and Samara Technical University in the field of water resources management and industrial wastewater treatment technologies, as well as by leaders and senior staff of environmental organizations and the regional administration in Samara. The Program is open for cooperation to interested professionals.

The Program will include the following activities:

The outcomes of this research in the form of guidelines, reviews, courses of lectures and seminars on the topics of the Program will be presented to the scientific community and broad public in Russia through workshops, conferences, round table discussions and in university lecture halls.

Program materials will be included in modernized training courses intended for students and industrial ecologists. Young scientists and students will attend conferences on rational water management and will be awarded scholarships by the Program. A sociological survey on citizen’s water perception will also be carried out in Samara as part of Program activities.

Modern communication technologies such as a portal, Websites and webinars will be used to enhance the process of community water resources management. Under the Program new approaches to studying and utilizing best water management resources practices will be synchronically applied to achieve tangible practical results.

The Program will promote environmentally responsible attitudes to water among citizens as to one of the vital resources of our planet and will also give an impetus to local economic development based on innovative approaches to protecting and saving water resources. FSD experts jointly with partners will ensure the introduction of bets technologies and solutions to challenges related to preserving and protecting water resources and treating polluted water.
